A friend gave me the idea to do this fun little fishing game. I pulled out our piles of craft foam and drew fish shapes for the boys. They started by coloring in their own fish, then Reed started drawing intricate patterns for me to fill in while Ashie glued on eyes and bling. Reed cut out his own, and Ashie cut out what he could and I helped him when needed. When they were done, we slid a paperclip onto the end of each fish, then created our fishing rods. Unfortunately, we didn't have strong enough magnets on hand to actually catch the fish when they were weighed down with the water. Fortunately, a quick trip to Hobby Lobby remedied the situation. Then we piled the fish into the tub and had a fishing trip.
The boys had a great time catching fish, especially when they discovered they could catch multiple fish at a time. And later, when we were done fishing, they went around the house with their magnets, testing the magnetic pull of various items and appliances. I made them a little chart and they'd test each item, then check whether it was magnetic or not (they also made their own distinctions of really magnetic or kind of magnetic). Honestly, I think they may have enjoyed the magnets more than the fish! We had a lot of fun, though, and will definitely be playing with our fish--and our magnets--again.
